Why Is My Shopify Store Slow? A Merchant Checklist
Work the checklist in impact order: identify the Largest Contentful Paint element and its size, inventory the JavaScript your apps inject on the page, remove code left behind by uninstalled apps, then audit third party tags and fonts. Measure with field data from the Chrome User Experience Report and a lab test on the template that earns the money, usually the product page on mobile.
Your store feels slow and the dashboard disagrees with everybody. The theme was fast at install. Nothing structural broke. What happened is accumulation, one reasonable addition at a time, until the product page is hauling the combined weight of two years of reasonable additions.
Merchants reach for the platform first because it is the biggest component. It is rarely the guilty one. Shopify serves from a fast global network; the variance between a fast store and a slow one on the same platform is almost entirely what the merchant's stack asks the shopper's phone to download, parse, and run.
Start with the LCP element, not the score
Largest Contentful Paint is the moment the main content renders, and the good threshold is 2.5 seconds or under at the 75th percentile of real visits. Find the element. On product pages it is the hero image; on collections, the first product image or a banner. Then ask the only questions that matter: how large is the file, is it preloaded or discovered late, and does anything block it.
An oversized hero image discovered late is the single most common LCP failure on stores this journal reviews. Right size the image for mobile, serve modern formats, and make sure the browser learns about it early. That one fix routinely outperforms a month of generic minification advice.
Inventory scripts like you mean it
Open the product page source and list every script, then match each to an app or a purpose. Stores routinely find review, popup, loyalty, chat, and measurement tools loading on every page including ones they never touch, plus the remains of apps uninstalled months ago whose code the uninstall never removed from the theme.
Remove the dead code first, it is pure win with no functional trade. Then challenge the live tools one by one: does this need to load before interaction, on this template, for every visitor. Defer what can be deferred and load on interaction what only some shoppers use, like chat.
Field data is the verdict, lab data is the flashlight
Lab scores from a single simulated run will argue with you depending on the hour. Field data, the Chrome User Experience Report figures shown in PageSpeed Insights and your Shopify speed context, describes what real shoppers experienced over 28 days. Chase the field numbers, use the lab to find causes.
Re-measure a week after each major change, one change at a time where you can stand it. Stores that change five things on a Tuesday learn that something worked and nothing about what. The checklist is short. The discipline of working it in order is the entire method.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good LCP for a Shopify store?
Google treats 2.5 seconds or under as good, measured at the 75th percentile of real user visits over a rolling 28 day window. Focus on the product and collection templates on mobile, where most traffic and most failures are.
Do apps really slow down a Shopify store?
Yes, when they inject JavaScript and CSS into pages. Each app's code must be downloaded and executed by the shopper's device. Uninstalled apps can also leave code behind in the theme, which keeps loading until someone removes it manually.
Should I chase a perfect PageSpeed score?
No. Lab scores are diagnostic, not the goal. Field data from real shoppers decides whether you have a problem, and template level fixes to the LCP element and script weight move field data more than score cosmetics do.
Where should I start if everything looks slow?
Find the LCP element on your highest earning mobile template, fix its size and loading priority, then inventory scripts. Those two steps address the majority of storefront slowness this checklist exists for.
